Hatters capture talented midfielder from Posh

The Town have boosted their squad with the signing of highly-rated Peterborough United midfielder Kane Ferdinand on loan until the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international arrives at Kenilworth Road having made five appearances on loan at League 2 Northampton this season.

Ferdinand began his career with Southend United, rising through the Shrimpers’ youth academy to make his first team debut three years ago this month in a 2-0 victory at Oxford United.

He went onto make a total of 22 appearances in his first season as a professional, but it was in 2011/12 that the midfielder shot to prominence. He scored seven goals for the Shrimpers, including a run of six goals in eight games, as his performances helped Southend reach the League 2 Play-Offs.

The following summer, after four games for the Shrimpers in League 2, he was snapped up by then-Championship club Peterborough for £200,000 in August. The Newham-born man went onto play 33 times for Posh in the second tier last season, scoring once – the winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Blackpool in March.

Following Peterborough’s relegation, Kane began the campaign out of the side Posh side but he enjoyed a short loan spell with Northampton in November before being recalled to London Road. The 21-year-old made three appearances for Darren Ferguson’s side on his return and made his last appearance on Boxing Day against Coventry.

“He’s an all-action midfield player who plays a high-energy game and gets all around the pitch,” a delighted John Still told lutontown.co.uk about his newest addition to the squad.

“He’s the sort of player I like. He can come up with the odd goal and for him to play 30-odd games in the Championship last season speaks volumes.

“It’s all happened a bit quick but he’ll travel with us to Lincoln and, all things being equal, he’ll be in the squad.”

Kane is available for selection at Lincoln has been handed the squad number 29.
