Everyone at Luton Town Football Club were saddened to hear the news of the passing of former Hatters Midfielder Andy King following an apparent heart attack, aged 58.
Andy was born in Luton, and after completing his apprenticeship with the Club, he turned professional in 1974. He remained with the club for 2 years as a player, making 33 appearances and scoring 9 times for the Hatters.
Andy then moved on to Everton in 1976, where he quickly established himself as a favourite with the Goodison Park crowd. Andy made an impressive 151 appearances for The Toffees, scoring 38 goals including a spectacular effort in the Merseyside derby in 1978, helping to seal Everton’s first win over arch rivals Liverpool in 7 years. It was during this time that Andy was also awarded 2 caps playing for the England U21s.
Andy then went on to play for, among others, QPR, West Brom and Wolves as well a second spell with Everton and also with Luton from 1985 – 86. His playing career spanned 14 years amassing 80 goals and 310 league appearances.
He remained in professional football as a manager for Waterford, Mansfield, Swindon, Grays Athletic and a spell as caretaker manager for Northampton Town.
At Luton, Andy will also be remembered fondly as the Commercial Manager during the early 90s. Current staff members who worked with Andy remember him as a hardworking, kind person who was always excellent company. Many board members saw Andy as a friend and have been touched deeply by this loss.
