Boss hopes for turnaround in fortunes on the road
They say home is where the heart is and on Saturday the Hatters aim to extend their unbeaten record at Kenilworth Road in League 2 to 14 matches when they entertain Morecambe.
The Hatters have won 11 and drawn three of their last 14 league games on home soil – a run stretching back to a 1-0 home defeat to Plymouth in early September.
Manager John Still knows the Town’s home form speaks for itself, but it’s been the recent results on the road that has concerned the boss.
And with three of the next four matches on the road after Saturday’s game with the Shrimps – a side that beat the Hatters in December – Still is hoping for a turn in fortune for the Hatters away from home.
"Our home form has been very good, and our away form has been disappointing," Still summed up at his Thursday press conference.
"You do need your big players away from home, it's tougher away from home. We’ve been missing Steve McNulty, Luke Wilkinson, Nathan Doyle. Hopefully we get them back in the next couple of weeks and I think that it'll make a little bit of a difference.
"I actually feel that we've possibly tried to be a touch too expansive on our play away from home, without having the right players to do it. That's what I've looked at and one of the things I've picked up.
"Instead of grinding it out we've perhaps tried to be too expansive without having the players of experience and knowledge in the team to actually do it.
"I've got to look at myself a bit as well, because we've slightly changed the system a bit in some games to accommodate the fact we'd like to score more goals, and in doing so you can disrupt other things.
"I've got a little bit of work to do, but I'm glad I've done it. Will it help us? I don't know. We'll have to wait and see but it's given us some ideas anyway."
Still hopes the Hatters can continue their good home form on Saturday and with a dozen games left the boss has called on his side to keep up with the pace at the top of League 2.
"Our home form has been very good, I've been absolutely delighted with that," he said. "I've not been unhappy with our away form, I've been unhappy with our last few performances away but I've not been overly unhappy with our away form before.
"With the players that have been missing, to be even in that group is an unbelievable achievement. But let's look at what we can do between now and the end of the season and make this a mini league. There are 12 games to go so it's a 12 game season, let's see what we can do."
