The Scotland international sheds some light on returning from injury

Striker Craig Mackail-Smith was delighted to get a run out on Tuesday in the development squad’s win against Barton Rovers, and he is hoping that he can break into the first team at the earliest opportunity after returning from injury.

Mackail-Smith, ‘or Macca’ as he is known by the playing staff, broke his leg in March against Plymouth, with the original prognosis ruling him out for three months.

There were complications with the injury which meant he had to have an operation that moved his plans for full time training back a further three months.

Speaking ahead of the Hatters’ match against Mansfield Town, Macca said it had been a while since he had last played at Barton’s Sharpenhoe Road, and that he wants to help the first team however he can.

The 32-year-old said: “I played there over 12 years ago for Arlesey Town, I was a flying right winger! It rolled back the years, but it was nice to get out and play 45 minutes, it has been a while.

“The front boys have been fantastic, obviously Hylts and Jack have been on fire. I want to be vying for a place and playing the best I can to get in the team.

“If I was called upon [for this weekend’s game] and the gaffer put me in the squad then I would be ready to go and play whatever part I needed to play.”
