11:28 12th November 2009

ITV got their cup shock at a freezing cold Spotland as the Hatters had 34-year-old Kevin Gallen to thank for a second-half double after he had kept Dale at bay in the first. The striker notched two poachers' strikes inside 13 second-half minutes to seal Richard Money's first win in charge of the Town after he had headed a shot off the goal-line three minutes before the break. The Hatters' withstood heavy pressure in the opening 45 minutes but for all Dale's superiority the score remained goalless. While the Town's progress in the Rochdale half was almost non-existent, the hosts wasted several good opportunities to take the lead. Gore has to be at his athletic best to repel efforts from Chris Dagnall, Chris O'Grady and Adam Rundle. But the best save of the half came from Gallen when he reacted smartly to head over Dagnall's goal-bound header on 42 minutes. It looked destined to hit the back of the net but the striker but the striker was on hand at the other end in the second half to grab a double that sent the Hatters into round. Dale started the second half brightly and came within a whisker of taking the lead just 20 seconds into the second 45 when Dagnall's swirling shot from outside the box cannoned off the crossbar and away to safety before Gallen took centre stage. His first, on the hour, came from good work down the Town left with Andy Burgess feeding Tom Craddock who squared for Gallen who poke a shot past Dale's 16-year-old debutant goalkeeper Danny Taberner. It got better for the Hatters on 73 minutes when a mix up in the Dale defence allowed Gallen to fire a shot goalwards that was turned over the bar by Taberner. However that was a brief respite as from the resulting corner from,,10372~9970,00.html","Kevin_Nicholls","height=0, width=0,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,status=1,toolbar=1,location=1");return false;' href="#">Kevin Nicholls, Alan White's flick-on found,,10372~22984,00.html","George_Pilkington","height=0, width=0,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,status=1,toolbar=1,location=1");return false;' href="#">George Pilkington whose header drew a super save from the young goalkeeper. But the ball spun high into the air and Gallen was the first on hand to bundle the ball over the line from less than a yard out. Gore was largely untroubled following the Hatters' second goal and Money's men comfortable saw out the final 15 minutes to earn a trip to Rotherham United in round two. Full time from Spotland Rochdale 0 Luton Town 2 (Gallen 60, 73) Result To get in touch email FULL TIMERochdale 0-2 Luton Town - It's all over here at Spotland. Another game of two halves..but this time the Town are on top and are through to round two. We'll have all the reaction to come. Get in! 90 mins - We've got four additional minutes to see out and it looks like we're coming up the M1 again in a few weeks time to the Don Valley Stadium to face another League 2 side. 88 mins - It's still 2-0 to the Town and this time - unlike on Saturday - we look comfortable. No nervy final minutes here? 83 mins - Third and final change for the Hatters as goal hero Gallen is replaced by Charles. 81 mins - More pressure from Dale but Dawson can only head wide of the target following Kennedy's right-wing cross. The Hatters are coping easily with the home attack now that looked so dangerous in the first half and at the beginning of the second. More activity on the Town bench,  just as Dagnall scuffs a shot wide. 78 mins - Rochdale are looking to retrieve the situation again, just like they did on Saturday but this time as O'Grady feeds Jones the Dale captain can only hit a low shot straight at Gore. 76 mins - Second change from the Town as Craddock is replaced by Gnakpa. 73 mins  GOAL! Rochdale 0-2 HATTERS - Well this keeps getting better and better...Gallen's got his second and you can't put that in from any closer! Originally the striker had seen an effort deflected over the crossbar after he'd robbed Kennedy of the ball. From the resulting corner from Nicholls, White heads it across goal that reaches Pilkington at the back post. His header draws a fabulous save from Taberner but his stop flies high in the air and as it falls down Gallen is there to make it two from what must have been millimetres. 69 mins - A fine move from the Town draws applause from the Hatters contigent in the press box. Nicholls finds Newton with a lovely pass inside and the Town sub forwards it to Craddock. The Hatters striker turns, looks up and crosses for goalscorer Gallen who punches a header goalwards that ghosts just past the post. It looks destined for 2-0 but that was a lovely move. Greay play. 68 mins - First change of the evening for Richard Money as Adam Newton - scorer of the Town's second goal on Saturday - is on for Hall. 66 mins - Dale have taken off Rundle so there's one less problem to worry about but I said the same on Saturday and they came back from the dead... 65 mins - I suppose that counts as a shot on target as Burgess attempts a Beckham-esque effort from his own-half as he spots Tabernet off his line but it's easy pickings for the young stopper. Email: "For keeping Town supporters connected. I'm in Toronto, Canada, and I am a devoted follower of your commentary during Hatters matches. Sadly, in Canada we don't get ITV, so I can't watch today's replay. And so, as usual, your site's commentary is the closest I can get to a Luton Town match. Much appreciated." - David Leonard. [David, thanks for the picture, sorry I can't publish it live now - AB] 63 mins - Activity on the Town bench... 60 mins  GOAL! Rochdale 0-1 HATTERS - Would you believe it! Against the run of play the Town have the lead. Burgess bursts down the left and feeds Craddock who squares the ball across goal for Gallen to tap home from close range past Taberner to send the hundred or so hardy Town fans into raptures. Well, well, well. It's all gone quiet around here. Football's a funny old game. 57 mins - Back come the Town though and Rochdale do well to clear their lines following another dangerous left-wing corner from Nicholls. Pilkington is again fishing for a penalty but once again the ref's not interested. 55 mins - Almost 1-0 but Gore again is equal to task in hand as he denied Dagnall with another super save with his legs after the home striker had sped clear of the Town defence. They're getting closer but can the Hatters hold on? Email: "Your stream is light years better than ESPN Soccernet gamecast! I can just feel the cold night in Rochdale from here in Toronto. Got a feeling Craddock is going to stuff one past their 16-year old goalie very soon!" Tony Hull 53 mins - And again. Rochdale's comeback on Saturday stemmed from their left and Thompson - the score of their final two goals at Kenilworth Road fails to plant his header past Gore after flying to meet Kennedy's left-wing centre. 52 mins - Back come Dale and Rundle again speeds down the right, cuts inside and curls a shot over Gore's crossbar. 50 mins - Well they ride the storm and almost take the lead against the run of play in bizarre circumstances. Jarvis won a corner down the left which was swung in by Nico to the back post and Dawson and Rundle get in a pickle with the former kicking the ball against his team-mate as he attempted to clear. Very close that. 48 mins - Dagnall's come out intent on putting this game to bed and after White's unfortunate slip the home striker tries to beat Gore from a narrow angle and the goalkeeper saves it well. Great start from Dale. The omens not looking good. Can the Town weather the storm? COYH. 46 mins We're underway in the second half and 20 seconds in Dale hit the woodwork as Dagnall smashes a drive from 25 yards against Gore's crossbar and over. Very close. 21:04 - Both sides are out on the pitch and Alan Neilson sets some cones out put the Town players through a little shuttle-run routine. We're almost set. But it's still cold. Hope you're keeping warm... HALF-TIME Rochdale 0-0 Luton Town - It's goalless at the end of the first 45 minutes and the Town have been well under the cosh from the League 2 high-flyers. But despite their dominance Dale's clear cut chances haven't tested the Town defence to the absolute max. We have had, however, Gallen to thank for a wonderful defensive header that would have seen the hosts ahead. At the other end there's not been much to shout about and the 16-year-old debutant between the sticks has had a relatively easy ride so far. Check back for more updates in 15... 44 mins - We've got one additional minute for either side to find the breakthrough... 42 mins - This is turning into the Dagnall and Rundle show as the two combine to see the latter fire a shot goalwards that his palmed away by Gore for a corner. From the resulting flag-kick, Gallen does magnificently to head over Dagnall's goal-bound header. Super header. Not sure he knew much about it but he takes the congratulations from his team-mates. 40 mins - Another half chance for Dale as Rundle scampers down the right again and cross for a team-mate to tap in but Asafu-Adjaye is there to avert the danger. Moments later Jones fires a shot wide of Gore's left-hand post as the hosts look for a lead to take into the break. Still 0-0 though. Are you enjoying it? 38 mins - The Hatters win their first corner that Burgess whips in to the back stick. Pilkington's there and it looks as though he's tugged but the ref's not interested. Pilks asks the man in green the question but it's not a pen. 35 mins - More direct dribbling from Rundle, this time down the centre of the pitch. He's surrounded like a pack of wolves - five Town defenders all in orange looking to hunt him down. He releases it to Thompson but he can only lash a cross behind Gore's goal, much to the disappointment of the home crowd. 34 mins - Those around me thought White should have been booked for an earlier challenge but he doesn't get away with it this time as the Town centre-half upends Dagnall 40 yards from goal. 31 mins - Half a chance for the Hatters and almost a scare for the Rochdale rookie stopper. Dawson plays a sloppy, underhit back-pass to him with Craddock hunting down the ball. The Town striker tackles Taberner but luckily for the hosts they the ball spins to safety. 29 mins - Young Taberner in the Dale goal gets his gloves warm for the first time since the early moments when comfortably catching Burgess' inswinging free-kick after Gallen was fouled on the edge of the area. That's a step closer. Email: "Sitting at my desk in Augusta, Georgia, USA, keeping up with Luton through y'all's stream. Go Hatters!!!" - Adam Roush. 25 mins - At last signs of the Town trying to get back into this but it's nothing spectacular. A few passes here in and there but it's wave after wave of Rochdale attack. Just as I say that Asafu-Adjaye puts in a magnifcent last-ditch tackle to deny Thompson from surging into the penalty area. 22 mins - The Hatters just cannot get going as Howells lets the ball run out for a throw. Gore gets his gloves warm again when holding onto Rundle's rasping shot which is straight down the keeper's neck. Email: Sitting at my desk at work here in Toronto, Canada.... can't find a live stream anywhere so I'm glued to you guys... come on you Hatters!" - Richard Mulley. 18 mins - Gore's in action again as he prevents Rundle's cross from being knocked in with a save with his legs after being fed by more skilful play by Dagnall. We must watch this boy. He's decent. 16 mins - Another hefty challenge on O'Grady, who has now taken a few whacks early doors. This time by Nico who is booked for his troubles. 14 mins - The Hatters have hardly had a kick so far. It's all Rochdale and Dagnall is proving to be real pest with his quick feet and close control. No chance of note from the visitors but it's still goalless though. 12 mins - White is fine. He's just launched himself into a beefy challenge on O'Grady and earns a ticking off from referee Bates. 10 mins - While I've got a minute, I'll tell you how the Town the lining-up tonight. Gore in goal, then across the back, right-to-left, Asafu-Adjaye, White, Pilkington, Howells, a midfield of Jarvis, Hall, Nicholls, Burgess and Gallen and Craddock up top. 7 mins - The hosts look very confident this evening and Dagnall in particular is causing the havoc. He gets the better of White and Asafu-Adjaye and Whitey's down hurt but is attended to by Harry Scott-Stackman. There's activity on the bench with Blackett looking lively but White looks ok to continue. Email: "Sat at frankfurt airport with no access to itv4 and on route to prague, will just get the first half of your commentary and then miss the rest, so can I request extra time as i might then get the last few minutes. Come on you hatters!" - Ian Gooderham 4 mins - Good build-up from Dale and they spurn two good chances in the space of a minute when firstly Dagnall is unable to turn home a left-wing cross when not expecting the cross to reach him and then,,10372~34031,00.html","Asa_Hall","height=0, width=0,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,status=1,toolbar=1,location=1");return false;' href="#">,,10372~34031,00.html">Asa Hall/a></a> deflected Chris O'Grady's shot behind for a corner that home skipper Jones eventually thumps over the crossbar. 2 mins - The Hatters venture into the Dale half for the first time and as,,10372~43611,00.html">Jake Howells swings in a left-wing cross, 16-year-old Taberner in the home goal gets his first touch confidently clutching onto the ball through a sea of bodies. Email: "The last two games we have been on the television for have been at Wembley, and we all know how that lovely day turned out, and in the semi final against Brighton, lets just hope we can produce again for the world tonight, come on you hatters!" -  Matt, Slapton 1 min - Almost the start the Town didn't have in mind as Shane Gore is called in to action after just 40 seconds to block Tom Kennedy's vicious drive from the edge of the area. 1 min And we're and running as the Hatters get us underway following an impeccably observed silence. 19:59 - The two sides are out on the pitch and that Hatters are sporing their orange shirt and navy blue shorts. We're about to have a minute's silence. 19:50 - It is a very sparse, very cold Spotland this evening and opposite me are around hundred hard souls that have made the Wednesday night trip to this part of Lancashire. Remember if you're not watching the action live on ITV4 stick with us on for live updates and get in touch. Commentary for Hatters Player subscribers is available although tonight sadly I am not joined by Simon "Statto" Pitts. We're taking a feed direct from our colleagues at Dale Player. So sit back - in the warm - and enjoy the game. COYH! 19:30 TEAM NEWS Welcome to Spotland. We've been stuck in a bit of heavy traffic but we are here. And it's cold! Keith Keane and Steve Basham miss out completely through injury while Freddie Murray serves a one-match suspension. Mark Tyler is still missing with a back injury and isn't risked so Shane Gore continues in goal. Once again the Town are unable to fill their full quota of seven substitutes on the bench. Dale meanwhile start with 16-year-old youth team goalkeeper Danny Taberner in goal. That's the only change that boss Keith Hill is forced into. For the first 50 years of their existence, England played their home matches all around the country.
